The Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) is examining allegations that he tampered with a South Korean Marine Corps' inquiry into the death of Lance Corporal Chae Su-geun.

A former South Korean defence minister implicated in a corruption investigation over the death of a soldier has arrived in Australia to take up his controversial appointment as ambassador.

병사 사망 사건과 관련해 부패 수사에 연루된 전직 한국 국방부 장관이 논란이 되고 있는 호주대사부임에 앞서 호주에 도착했다

 

 

Late last week South Korea's Justice Ministry lifted a travel ban on Lee Jong-sup, allowing the newly appointed diplomat to depart Seoul despite the highly publicised accusations levelled at him.

지난주말 한국 법무부는 이종섭 전 장관에 대한 여행 금지 조치를 해제했고, 새로 임명된 이종섭은 비난 여론에도 불구하고 서울을 떠날 수 있게 되었다

 

Accusations of abuse of power 권력남용 고발

더불어민주당은 한국의 외교부,법무부 장관을 권력남용과 수사를 방해한 혐의로 공수처에 형사 고발하는 한편, 국가 기관이 이 씨의 호주 출국을 도왔다는 의혹을 제기할 것이라고 밝혔다.

 

Sources have confirmed to the ABC that Mr Lee landed at Brisbane International Airport early on Monday morning, ahead of making his way to Canberra where he'll soon present his credentials as South Korea's next ambassador.

소식통에 따르면 이종섭 내정자는 월요일 아침 일찍 브리즈번 국제공항에 도착했으며, 곧 캔버라로 이동해 한국의 차기 호주대사로 임명장을 받을 예정이라고 ABC 방송이 확인했다.

 

According to South Korean media reports the Presidential office and Foreign Ministry claimed to be unaware of the travel ban imposed on Mr Lee in January, who was then able to successfully lobby to the Justice Ministry to revoke it.

한국 언론 보도에 따르면 용와대와 외교부는 지난 1월에 내려진 이종섭에 대한 출국금지 조치를 몰랐다고 주장했지만, 이종섭은 법무부에 로비를 벌여 이를 철회하는 데 성공했다.

 

While the saga has the potential to cause difficulties in the diplomatic relationship between Australia and South Korea, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has welcomed Mr Lee's arrival.

이 사건으로 인해 한-호주 외교 관계에 어려움을 겪을 가능성이 있지만, (호주)외교통상부는 이 씨의 입국을 환영했다

 

"Australia values its important relationship with the Republic of Korea and looks forward to working with ambassador designate Lee in his new role," a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) spokesperson told the ABC.

(호주)외교통상부 대변인은 ABC 방송에 "호주는 한국과의 중요한 관계를 소중히 여기며 이종섭 대사 내정자가 새로운 역할에서 함께 일하기를 기대한다"고 말했다.  (호주 외교부의 뻔한 외교멘트)
